English Haydn Festival from June 3rd to June 8th 2014

June 3, 2014 @ 7:30 pm - June 8, 2014 @ 10:00 pm

Internationally acclaimed soloists from Russia, France, Sweden, Spain and the UK will perform at the annual English Haydn Festival in its 21st anniversary year, in Bridgnorth, Shropshire. They include the celebrated harp player David Watkins, the oboe soloist Anthony Robson, featured on the BBC Classic FM programme, the violin virtuoso and leader of the Festival orchestra, Simon Standage, and the brilliant Russian violinist Alina Ibragimova.

This year’s theme focuses on Haydn’s England and his very productive and lucrative Golden years, between composing the Paris and London symphonies, with performances of his symphonies, together with music by Mozart and Krumpholtz, including a Beethoven piano concerto. In addition, talented Russian cellist Pavel Serbin will play a newly discovered Stamitz concerto, performed for the first time since the eighteenth century, (a World first), and mezzo soprano Clare McCaldin sings and narrates a version of her very successful London show “Haydn’s London Ladies”.

Haydn Festival

Concert performances are enhanced by the English Haydn Orchestra performing on period instruments, conducted by the distinguished director and harpsichordist Anthony Halstead, well known for his many recordings of baroque and classical period music.
Lunchtime and evening string quartet concerts feature the Chiaroscuro Quartet, a group formed whilst studying at the Royal College of Music, London, and the welcome return of the Salomon Quartet, the English Haydn Ensemble, and the Barbican Piano Trio.

The Festival finishes with Haydn’s masterpiece “Mass in Time of War”, sung by soprano Natalie Clifton-Griffiths, alto Miranda Westcott, with tenor Daniel Norman and bass Andrew Slater, both having performed at London’s Covent Garden Opera House. The soloists will be accompanied by the Haydn Festival Chorus, conducted by John Moore.
