Carnival Royalty 2015 – Applications now available

Bridgnorth Town Carnival is back for its third year and the search is on for a Carnival Queen, two Princes and two Princesses with the addition of a Carnival King for 2015.

Entrants will need to complete an application form and submit a photograph of themselves which is likely to be printed in the Bridgnorth Journal and on the Town Council website. The closing date for entries is 29 April 2015 and all entries, together with a photograph should be sent to Bridgnorth Town Council, College House, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, WV16 4EJ .

Selected winners will be invited to attend a Crowning Ceremony being held in the Town Hall, Bridgnorth on Saturday 16 May 2015.

Line the streets from the Livestock and Auction Centre in Tasley down to Severn Park to catch a glimpse of the return of the Bridgnorth Town Carnival!

This year promises to be bigger and better than last year with floats, entertainment and refreshments from 12 noon until around 9.30pm. Family entertainment will take place on stage and in the arena from 1pm once the floats have arrived followed by live music into the evening.

Saturday 29th June 2013 saw the first Bridgnorth Town Carnival in nearly 20 years and what a Carnival it was! Thousands of people lined the streets to watch the procession working its way from the Livestock and Auction Centre in Tasley down to Severn Park, where a host of entertainment awaited.

Entrants into the procession included Tasley Toddlers, Bridgnorth Rugby Club, Bridgnorth Women’s Institute, People’s Hall Evangelical Church, Lisa Beard’s Zumba Group, Bridgnorth Lions Club, Bridgnorth Vintage Machinery Club, Kev the Clipper’s Camper Van, Bridgnorth Fire Station, The Big Scoop Campaign, a Carnival Clown, Theatre on the Steps, Bridgnorth Running Club/Asthma UK and Digital Wizardry.

Once the floats had arrived on Severn Park, the final judging of the floats commenced. The Mayor, Councillor Ray Gill, opened the event and welcomed the crowds. The winning entries were then announced; Best Float – Tasley Toddlers (Smurfs), Best Walking Entry – Bridgnorth Running Club/Asthma UK (Puff the Dragon and his fellow dragons) and Best Show Vehicle – Kev the Clipper’s Camper Van.

The afternoon continued with two interactive Zumba performances, a Welly Wanging Competition, a demonstration from Bridgnorth Tae Kwon-Do and a tug of war competition which included a “man versus machine” competition where people were invited to pull a Vintage Tractor. The adults were unsuccessful in their efforts and the children were crowned champions when the tractor came rolling backwards.

The evening came alive with the sound of music from local bands which included performances from Rhi Moore, Bridgnorth Ukulele Band, Audio Thieves, Louise Bellamy, Duchess and the Dukes, Living Proof, The Big People’s Band, Fake Obsession Unplugged and Gas Food Lodging.

The event received great support and sponsorship from local businesses including Wideawake and Sorted Direct Mail Ltd who designed and printed the Carnival Programme, FRS Countrywear Ltd who organised the Welly Wanging Competition, Bridgnorth Ford who provided the Carnival Royalty vehicles, The Punchbowl, Swan Inn at Knowle Sands and Perry & Phillips Funeral Directors for sponsoring the prizes for best float, best show vehicle and best walking entry, Clive Cowern Transport Services Ltd for the provision of the stage for the day, Stitches of Bridgnorth for banners and safety wear, Ebenezers Floral & Bridal Design for the Carnival Royalty’s flowers, Review Media for the production of the Carnival Route map, Bridgnorth Town Council, Bridgnorth Town Events Committee, Shropshire Council and the Shropshire Star. Organisers of the event would like to thank Mid Counties Co-operative, Bridgnorth Young Farmers and all of the volunteers who helped with the organisation before and during the event.

The event has proved a huge success and is already in the diary for 2014!
